The Drama For May, 2011

Well, May 2011 is going to go down in history as a month of spectacular #Fails. Shall we begin with Apple's contention how the term App Store is not about the sale of....Apps? Or the sad case of George Reker, pulpit - pounder, who's entire platform has been anti-gay rhetoric, only to be found pounding a rentboy in europe? Or maybe we could discuss how Media gave the time of day to some 89 year old who predicted the end of the world? We won't even mention Senator John Edwards. Any way you see May, 2011 - it is marked with #Fail all over it.

But it was still a good month. The Mr. D Sane interview (urban music producer extraordinaire) went quite well, I think. I'm also absolutely loving the upcoming mix cd by Eighty4fly. You've been hearing me for the last year about this artist. Isn't it time you get onboard the #Flyworld movement? His twitter addy is @Eighty4fly. Finally, a few new clients haven't hurt one bit. Special thanks to uber-real estate agent, Sylvia Dunbar - Malibu Cali 4 Nai Ay, and Cantinetta Restaurants Northwest for the Dexter love!

Notable Mentions For May - B Hotel Miami, RN74 opening in Seattle, Thomas Kramer, Jetpacks, Haiti's fudging numbers to hit up more Aid money, Windows 8, Tesla secondary stock offering, the Hotel Bel Air L.A. remodel, Fred The Godson, Cannes, and Maria Shriver, who wasn't having it!

See you soon.

The Drama For January, 2011

What did I learn during 2010? More isn't more. More is time. More is energy. These were important ingredients missing from my cupboard. But some cool things did come out of my kitchen anyway. One big casualty of last year's journey was this website. Why? The game is changing monthly and I simply cannot keep up with it. I will explain.

There are no fewer than thirty different avenues anyone can take on a daily basis to share, post, communicate, express, complain, love, hate, or chat. And there is no time for it all. None. Especially if you have PR / promotions clients who need THEIR thirty different avenues serviced too. There is so much out there I am of the belief a website is becoming as relevant as Friendster. Seriously. Think about it. As a street marketing - promotions guy, the work is out there, not in here. Blog sites and social media have long overtaken personal branding, why bother with a site unless you're selling T shirts or plane tickets? Ok, maybe that's a bit extreme, but this is why I've been AWOL here. I'm finding so many MORE powerful tools it's hard to come back to the beginning like this. But here I am. Happy New Year!

Even if Northwest weather continues to kill me (literally, I've been sick for entire 2011 so far), I am just so happy to live in a place where every single night, Seattle's urban music scene is everywhere. Can you go to packed clubs and venues on a Monday - Thursday in your area to see talent? We do. The choices are incredible. And it's all due to a small handful of people. Powerful people who don't even know what they've done for the scene. Then you have the other catalyst for 2010. Video. Remember those? Just when anyone thinks it's a played out form of marketing, artists here energize it as an ART FORM. Seattle, already known in many industries for creating quality products and services, flipped the entire urban music genre with some of the cleanest, heartfelt, honest visuals to match great sound - beginning with Macklemore and Grynch - followed by knockout one - two punches by Eighty 4 Fly, J. Pinder, Wizdom, and all the viral support this town could offer in return.

Of course, I like this one too, for selfish reasons!

We won't even start with how Casey Carter (www.MissCaseyCarter.com) creates new markets simply by talking. I won't bore you with small detail as to how a clothing company like Two In The Shirt can honor a city simply by being based in Seattle, or the Celebrity factor these guys bring to the table. In my world, this stuff is important, and it's all part of the Seattle music renaissance taking place.

BUZZ FOR JANUARY: Neema, Clipse from Parker Brothaz, huge informant case against Swag (three years of snitching? Wow - people), DJ B Mello Birthday party in Tacoma - and on that subject - Tacoma's Murano Hotel, Tenor Wines, Macklemore, J. Pinder, Papa Doc Duvalier, Facebook IPO, Sonny Bonoho @ Sundance, iMusic Club Seattle, the new Roxbury Club (L.A.)

WANKSTER FOR JANUARY: Tucson, Arizona. You know what you did.

I can't say when I'll be back with a new design for this site, or another issue of The Drama, but until then - find me @ www.twitter.com/genedexter .

I have to face facts. I'm curious about too many things. Way too many things. Still, it doesn't stop me pursuing passionate interests. Take example the intersection of music and lifestyle. Some do not see its connection. I do. Everyday. It's easy to find. Take for example, the True Wine Connoisseurs online TV show, hosted by the Brand Nubian himself, Sadat X, and his producer, Will "Tell" Davis.

They may not have realized it at the time they began TWC, but X and Davis have tapped into a much needed and undercared for interest in wines. Yes, I said WINES. Now, why should this be a surprise to anyone? Wine is thousands of years old, tastes great and is as complex and layered as music. And yet, we don't hear from our hip hop music tastemakers about this.........until now. Here is a recent episode where Sadat X give his nod toward one of the great wine making regions, Washington State:

The best part of all? TWC takes the mystery and snobbery out of wine criticism. They have singlehandedly shown how wine emperors have no clothes! I just love that 'ish. Quite a few egos in the wine market are going to be deflated by this show. TWC is actually moving wine too! A lot of it. Leveling the playing field is something I wholeheartedly support. Now, if we can just develop restaurant criticism in the same way, I would die a very, very happy fan!

BUZZ For APRIL: Nicki Minaj, Jesse James, Kevin Powell For Congress, Infiniti G 37, The Double Club London (www.TheDoubleClub.co.uk), Rat Press (www.RatPress.com), Seattle Weekly Voracious Tasting event, Freeway/Sonny Bonoho/Grynch record releases, a new online radio show by Neema of Unexpected Arrival (remember him? He's back!),
Whrrrl, GoWalla and Foursquare.

WANKSTER FOR APRIL: SXSW Interactive. it's bad enough how these techies come into Austin a full week prior to music cats to do this thing, sort of like taking control of a dining room by squatting for a few hours until the rest of the family arrives for the real party and time they actually wanted ....but once they do, SXSW Interactive doesn't even try to mesh with the needs and aspirations of music people or programs specific to MUSIC INDUSTRY.

It's as though an entire section of high school decided to go camping outside the cool people's lunchroom. I really, really am not hearing it, and it gets worse every year. Following the Twitter hashtag #SXSW Interactive was a painful few days of viewing something out of Lost- Season 41. Start DOING SOMETHING ABOUT HELPING MUSIC.

HE'S SHOUTING OUT: Chad Johnson from Dusted Valley Winery, www.BlogsIsWatching.com , www.MissCaseyCarter.com , www.206Proof.com , The Parker Hotel Palm Springs, Mary K. LeTourneau-Fuulau, ASW (www.ASmallWorld.net), DJ EFN (Miami), Shabazz Palaces.

The Drama For November, 2009

Well, yeah. I have highly neglected The Drama column for 2009. What can I say?! I found the next playthings. Toys, if you will. An internet TV show. A PR company. A big project with another small'ish talent I hold, Hospitality management/marketing. Hey, it's a recession, we have to keep it moving, right?

I'm not about to recap the year. It was one of the worst, and one of the very, very best too. Facebook has been something of a diary for me and satisfied my immediate need to record moments. The concerts, dinner parties, meetings, lunch dates, etc. are all there for the network to see, so I won't dish too hard on the Blogger page, which I'm revisiting after setting up the account back in 2006! Hey, I'm busy! Getting back to this isn't easy.

There were many wonderful highlights and moments. Nappy Roots, Too Short, Devin The Dude, Macklemore, Grynch, DJ B Mello, Funk Daddy coming over to chop it up. The Daddy O (Stetsasonic, MCA) visit to Seattle and summer party at my home. Mr. Cinatra, E Dawg. Flying in relatives and friends over the greatest summer I've ever seen from sixteen years in Seattle, because I wasn't going anywhere during high season in the 206!

Yes, times are hard, aren't they. I've taken a step back or two, or......three just like you have. And 2010 isn't looking much better, is it. But it's no excuse to give up, right? We have our families (at least the ones we like), friends, we have TODAY. Live it. Just.... be. Don't let what's right in front of you go by. Never.

BUZZ FOR NOVEMBER: Lotus Evora, Valigia Peroni , Hotel St. Cecelia in Austin, TX , Mission One Bike , Etsy , Sonny Bonoho's new record, Pink, Hotel Bel Air closure (will it really be reopening? Some wags in L.A. say No. It's a beautiful property. I think they'll be just fine), Fabio's (Top Chef) new tratoria Firenze in North Hollywood, Ca.

WANKSTER FOR NOVEMBER: I had more than a few to choose from this summer. Nothing that rattled my cage enough to remember, though. So not this month. Except of course, AEG, for not simply letting Michael Jackson go and having it's insurance policy subsidize potential losses from their pre-production costs of the This Is It Tour. Instead, the machinery went into overdrive and AEG comes up with an exploitative Memorial (letting L.A. foot the bill, of course), and a movie that's coming out too soon. WAY TOO SOON. But that's just me. www.ThisIsNotIt.com .

Considering how I let The Drama get rusty over the last nine months, this one feels ok. I will let it ride. If more toys don't come along, I hope to be back in a month or two. In the meantime, keep your head up.

The Drama For January, 2008

What do Lou Pearlman and Chris Stokes have in common this month? Now before you say "duhhh Gene, we all heard about those molestation allegations", think about what the other shoe is sounding like as it drops to an unclean and nasty floor; the victims are said to be the ones who will be punished. Huh? Welcome to the music Industry! That cuddly, do-gooder business that really takes care of its young artists!!

Yes, yes y'all. Forget what some fat and greasy dudes are accused of doing, let's vilify the chirdrens! The only thing you hear after these stories is how these youngsters careers will be over, how unmarketable they will be. Isn't that just cozy? So very warm and fuzzy? Some families would be running to the nearest counseling office and police precinct, but this being about record sales and all, let's just move on, especially if we want to continue seeing opportunities Industry pedophiles offer! And one more thing....notice how this talk about Pearlman is coming out only now, at a time when he can't do anything further for these little boys and their stage mothers and dads (Lou's facing federal charges for the missing 400 Million dollars he's been floating, in jail without bail).

What would happen to Americans if we had an opportunity to buy a new $2,500 car called the Tata Nano, from India??!! I think we would be some Tata driving fools, that's what! This is a recession buster if I've ever heard one. Somehow I think certain business forces will see to it this doesn't happen.

Seattle may not be the center of the hip-hop universe just yet, but it sure knows a thing or two about web 2.0 . Take for example the latest entry in Seattle hip-hop blogging, posting, promotion, humor, politics and general clowning of the status quo. It's called www.206Proof.com and if you haven't joined in, it's because you simply don't fit the profile of Early Adopter! Some of the threads on this site are Falling Down LOL material. One in particular had me crying for a week just thinking about it. Check out Hip-Hop look-a-likes and see what I mean.

So I'm in back of one of the expanding fleet of Ghetto Prez' party buses, and he's playing this hot new record out of the 206 by J-Steelz. Just as I'm settling into this cut called Aw Naw, we jump out and into the SeaSound Lounge, where Mr. Supreme is pounding the same record in a packed room. Now I'm raising an eyebrow. But wait, it gets better. Prez then drags me down to Twilight to catch up with one our favorite bartenders, Zar, and sure enough, J-Steelz himself along with his manager David Long are walking out the door with a preview copy in hand for me to review! The project is called Now Or Never, and I couldn't agree more.

It's official. I'm signed up as the restaurant reviewer for Night Efx magazine. I'm calling the column The Epicurean, and it's going to cover the places I think will be next before they're next. Check it out once per issue/month. For my special Crazy Pinoy readers only, a secret: I'm sneaking into Kurrent (Capital Hill), Purple (downtown) and Vertigo (Bellevue) restaurants for my beginning efforts. They won't know what hit 'em!

BUZZ FOR JANUARY: Slocal food movement, Atlanta real estate meltdown, Xtube, Ace Hotel NY opening, Lupe Fiasco, Speed Racer (the film), Kenya, Cool Kids, Villa (L.A.).

WANKSTER FOR JANUARY: TMZ. People getting into their cars after dinner or the club is not news.

SHOUT-OUTS: The chirdrens.

The Drama For December, 2007

One thing about life in america we can always be sure of; if we can be fooled once, we can be fooled twice. That is, if the Bush Administration dares to continue refuting hard evidence that Iran curtailed its nuclear program back in 2003. I don't know if anyone is prepared for another war; are you? I wasn't ready for the Drama in Iraq either! Still, our president and his criminal friends are trying to set the stage once again.

We have enough problems. Investment Banks are beginning to show market wear and tear, the mood around much of the U.S. about its residential real estate is nasty, the media continues to dance on every rumor or comment about the economy, and now we have Wag The Dog style sound-bites about Iran escalating from the White House. Can we all just take a break?

Just remember to stay calm, collected, and remember history. When blood is running through the streets, start buying hard assets. I am. While doing that, I'm also keeping an eye on some stock purchasing. Citigroup, BofA, WAMU. I'm a contrarian, what can I say?! Always have been. But history is on my side. How about you?

The guilty verdict over DJ DV One's trial was a huge surprise to many of us following it. His sentencing is on December 14th in Seattle. Many are saying he won't receive more than probation. I hope that's true. But then, I've been swearing up and down for the last year in this column how the case was going to get squashed; clearly, it has not. My predictions about real estate and music Industry have enjoyed a better track record. All we can do now is support Toby during this time. How about you?

I found out about the Andre Nicotina show way too late. I hope his opening act, Sonny Bonoho, killed it as usual. Sorry I missed it.

One thing I won't be slippin' on is the Block Teamsters Union compilation, coming soon. The feature track by Beezie 2000 is receiving Seattle radio support already, and I'm hoping to receive the treatment for the video, soon. Not sure what my appearance on it will be, just look for the old guy somewhere in it! www.BlockTeamstersUnion.com for more info..

It was exactly a year ago today how O'Asian (downtown Seattle) told me they were never going to turn themselves into a club, even though the place was beautiful but dead. How tunes change. Now it's the hottest Friday/Saturday night club venue in Seatown. So hot that I couldn't find parking to meet friends at McMormick And Schmicks six blocks away! You were warned here first!

BUZZ FOR DECEMBER: Vudu, Major League Soccer (www.mlsinseattle.com ), Gansevoort South Hotel (Miami), Champagne vineyards coming to England? Jia Shanghai (www.JiaShanghai.com ), R.I.P. George Osmond / one of the world's greatest promoters, Never Enough (book release), The Bathing Ape L.A.

WANKSTER FOR DECEMBER: A site called www.SeattleBubble.com . These doomsday knuckleheads have been predicting the meltdown of Seattle housing for over a year and a half now. They show stupid charts and graphs from markets having nothing to do with us and take numbers out of their asses about declines of 20-40%. Meantime, the REAL pros know metro Seattle will be seeing another 3% increase across the board! Just give it up, bubble heads!

SHOUT-OUTS For Year-End: All the clients, friends, Drama readers, O.G.'s, newbies, players, hustlers, bartenders, socialites, pimps, MC's and tastemakers!
